Meixiangzhai Village is an affluent place and most residents lead a well-off life by making and selling embroidery products. It is hard to imagine that this village was so stricken by poverty in the past that the people ate a mixture of rice and corn as their staple diet due to a shortage of rice.
Gu Lanhua has made remarkable contributions. To end hunger, she introduced modern agricultural models to the village, leading to a big harvest. To solve the shortage of doctors and medicine, studied at a medical school with government fund, and finally established a clinic in the village.
As a well-reputed master of embroidery, Gu established an embroidery center in 2015 and the Jinxiu Farmers' Professional Cooperative of Embroidery in 2016, empowering women and improving their livelihoods. Their embroidery products are even sold to overseas markets. “The sales of Miao embroidery products are expected to reach 1 million yuan. It will lift more residents out of poverty, and our village may be removed from the list of poverty-stricken villages in 2017.” She said with confidence.
In the village, Gu is a strong and uncompromising party secretary. At home, she is a caring Miao woman taking great care of her mother-in-law, mentally-impaired brother-in-law and her children. She is indeed a good wife in the neighborhood.
